Transitioning from employment to self employment to becoming an inspired entrepreneur

Having moved from the corporate environment where I worked and starting my own business was one of the courageous and exciting things I ever did, and has led to incredible rwards and fulfilment. Since then I have helped hundreds of people plan and make their transition into their own business, and then succeed in it.

Running your own business can be a marvellous way of:

· Living your sense of purpose
· Making the money you need to live in a more meaningful way
· Investing your energy to build your own life
· Discovering what you are capable of
· Being free to set your own goals

Overcome your resistance to doing what you love, your creativity, success and money

If you long to be writer, but don’t write, have brilliant ideas for a business but haven’t started it yet or know what you’d love to do but keep putting it off, you already know resistance. Resistance is that invisible but tangible avoidance of doing what we’d most love to do and would be meaningful to us. But the good news is that you can learn to beat it and realise your own potential. I wonder if 80% of human talent, potential and possibility go unrealised because of our resistance. If you recognise that you are in resistance, (and most of us are to some extent) then you can learn how to grow bigger than your fear and resistance.

Fellow consultants, speakers, coaches or authors - create inspiring information products from your expertise

Sharing your expertise, ideas, information and experience with people whose lives are enhanced by it is one of life’s great joys and immensely fulfilling. It can also be tremendously profitable when you know how to do it effectively, even allowing you to earn money while you sleep and when you are on holiday. I earned tens of thousands of pounds from information products in the last few years.

In order to do it successfully, you need to know the territory and the key components that will enable you to succeed. I can help you with a map of that territory that you can follow to becoming an effective and successful packager of your ideas, experience, expertise and information and help you find the people who need what you know. I can also show you how to avoid  many of the biggest mistakes most people make when creating their information products.

Brian Mills – Living his dreams – from underground ticket collector to movie therapist, angel therapist, writer and film maker

Brian_photoBrian is one of the most infectiously enthusiastic people I have ever met, with a wonderful innocence and is a natural dreamer, in the most positive sense.

When we first met he was working at London Underground at Temple Station and his duties included collecting tickets. But Brian was leading a double life on his days off, evenings and weekends. He was a passionate student of spiritual and personal development ideas, which started as he had a speech impediment as a child and was extremely self-conscious and learned how to overcome his fear and phobia. He had a life long love affair with films, loved to write and already written articles and one book about film memorabilia.

Time to leave

Brian had been smitten with the idea that part of the trick to happiness at work was your attitude towards your work, which helped him enjoy what he did more. But he confided to me, “I have learned to tear tickets with a smile on my face, tear tickets with love and tear tickets with awareness. But I am getting fed up with tearing tickets! I enjoy the camaraderie of the railway, but I know there must be more.” So Brian signed up for the Unconditional Success Master Class I started in February 2002. During that course, run a day a month over six months, he decided that he could actually do anything he wanted. Through the ideas I taught, the encouragement of the group and the belief he had in himself, Brian reconnected with his ability to dream and then manifest his dreams.

The Time Was Right

Within that six-month period, he took early retirement from London Underground where he had worked on and off for eighteen years. Then he enrolled on Angel Therapy training with Doreen Virtue in USA. On top of that he also reconnected with a childhood dream of living by water, and through a series of amazing coincidences found a houseboat on the beautiful Tagg’s Island near Hampton, and decided to move home from his old family house in East Ham, East London to the houseboat.

Brian’s passion portfolio

Brian now runs a business but doesn’t see what he does as a business, but more of a collection of passions of his that he gets paid for. He earns money from:

· Writing – about film and angel therapy and doing film reviews
· Individual angel guidance readings and angel workshops
· Movie therapy – he helps people find movies that will help them grow and expand and has already been a guest on the Richard and Judy afternoon TV show in the UK

What does Brian love about his work now?

Brian now gets paid for doing what he would happily have been anyway and is passionate about two particular things in his work:

1. Being a creator – having ideas and making them become real – he is fascinated by how thought become things and we can craft our lives through the power of our imagination

2. The ability to inspire people – to be able to help people believe in new possibilities for themselves and guide them through the journey of creating positive change

What part did I play?

Brian told me, “You came along at the right time. I needed someone to inspire me and look up to. It is important to have mentors – you inspired me to go and inspire other people. You helped me develop the confidence and self belief to revive my dreams and go for them.”

Brian has now followed his passion for movies through to actually writing, producing and directing his first eight minute feature film called Chic Cuisine and has a new dream of writing and directing a feature film.

Brian's tips for fellow dream builders

I finished by asking Brian what tips he has for other people wanting to follow their dreams:

1. Believe in your yourself, believe in your dreams
2. Be enthusiastic and passionate because that is attractive and draws people and situations to you
3. Keep stoking the fires of passion. It is OK to have lots of dreams and lots of passions, not just one, and passion is the fuel for your dreams
4. Get more "cheer" leaders in your life and weed out the "jeer" leaders

Rick Thorn, teaching and learning expert

Dsc00573_2My colleague Rick Thorn has been a friend and mentor to me and helped me understand how to turn my expertise into good learning programmes and has overseen the creation of our online programmes. Some of you may know him through his own Inspired Teaching on line learning programme or our live events together in London.

I am sorry to report that as of February 2007, Rick is seriously ill with cancer and is completely out of action for the foreseeable future.

Please hold him in your thoughts if you have a chance. Many thanks.

The biggest mistake you are likely to make in your journey to create your expert niche

Becoming perceived as an expert is one of the most important elements to creating a successful niche for yourself. But here is the biggest single mistake I see people make around beginning their expert journey: They view the people they look up to, the authors, writers, broadcasters and speakers, and they say to themselves, “But I’ll never be able to say it as well they do, know as much as them, be as good as them or be as well known as them.” They then use that as a judgement against themselves and don’t bother to start their expert journey. I am sure you can recognise that dynamic, focussing on what you don’t know, haven’t done, and what experience and qualifications you think you don’t have.

Shift your focus

As a trainee expert you need to shift your focus. You need to understand and recognise what you do know, the experience you do have, the goodwill you have already created and whatever profile you might have. Then you can look in the other direction to the people who don’t know what you know and see how you can inspire and teach them. Your job is to learn more from your expert heroes and heroines and teach what you know to the people coming up behind you.

Knowing what you know

I find that the biggest problem for many people is that they believe everyone knows what they know. They don’t recognise the significance of their own life experience, and the information and ideas they have. Often this is because it comes easily and naturally to them and they think it is easy for everyone.

So take an inventory of the following:

· What do you know?

· What successful experiences have you had?

· What have you learned how to do?

· What are your most significant personal achievements?

· What major obstacles have you overcome?

· What are you naturally good at?

· What have you spent years getting good at?

· What are you always being asked for your help with?

Millions of people don’t know what you know and have not had your life experience. Learn to treasure what you know and understand that there are people you could help, teach and mentor with what you know right now. You may need to take time to "unpack" and understand what it is that you uniquely know, but is in there waiting to be unlocked.
